Frequently asked questions

What does Chestful actually do?

You photograph a print with your phone. Chestful finds the edges, straightens it, repairs damage and fading, suggests a caption, a date range and tags, and then exports the whole album with that information embedded in each file — not stranded in a sidecar file no other app reads.

Do I need a scanner?

No. Your phone camera is the scanner. Flat, even light and a small margin of background around the print are all it needs — see the scanning tips below.

What happens to the original photo?

Nothing. Restored versions are stored alongside the original, never on top of it, so you can always go back to what you scanned.

Are my photos used to train AI?

No. Restoration and captioning run through Google’s Gemini API on a paid tier, where the content is not used for model training, and we do not train models of our own. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.

How do I share an album with my family?

Open the album, tap Share, and enter their email address. Choose Viewer if they should only look and download, or Editor if they should be able to add and change photos too. They get an email; if they already use Chestful the album simply appears. You can change or remove access whenever you like, and they can leave the album.

Can strangers see my photos?

No. There is no public feed and no way to browse other people’s albums. Photos are visible only to you and to people you have explicitly invited to a specific album.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so they are cancelled there: on iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions. The app links straight to it from Help and support → Cancel my membership. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

How do I delete my account and everything in it?

In the app: Menu → Help and support → Delete my data. It is immediate and permanent — account, albums, photos, restored versions, captions and sign-in, all of it. If you cannot get into the app, email us and we will do it for you.

I scanned the back of a photo. Where did it go?

Chestful pairs the front and back of the same print into one item. Open the item and swipe to see the reverse — handwritten names and dates on the back are often the only record of who is in the picture.

Scanning tips

A few minutes of setup makes a visible difference to every photo you scan.

Flat, even light beats bright light

Lay prints on a matte surface near a window. Direct lamps and overhead spots create glare and hot spots that no amount of restoration can undo.

Fill the frame, but leave a margin

Get close enough that the photo fills most of the viewfinder, with a small border of background showing so edge detection can find the corners.

Scan the back when there is writing

Dates, names and notes on the reverse are often the only record of who is in the photo. Chestful pairs both sides into a single item.

Batch a stack, then sort

Scan a whole stack in one session and reorder afterwards by dragging in the album. It is far faster than perfecting each photo as you go.

Group a box per album

One album per shoebox or envelope keeps context that would be lost in a single giant library, and makes exports easier to hand to family.
